WORD PAIRING MINI LESSON

UNIT TITLE: Composing sentences with correct structure and words
LESSON TITLE: Choosing the right word pair
CONTEXT: I would teach this lesson before a writing session. I would go over incorrect words before students began writing a paper. If students are not showing progress with word pairs, then another lesson can be taught during the editing and revision process. Students will need to learn these word pairs because they are frequently misunderstood and can be confusing. When writing academic papers, students will need to know which word pair is correct and incorrect in a sentence. Hopefully, this lesson will help the students distinguish between one word to another.
OBJECTTIVE: Students will be able to distinguish which word pair fits correctly in a sentence depending on the context of the sentence. Students will be able to write their own sentences using the word pairs.
COMMON CORE STANDARDS:
Grade 6: Writing Standard 3- Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to convey experiences and events.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: This lesson will be taught before a writing assignment before major writing occurs.
  1. Intro- I will ask students if they are familiar with word pairs and if they know what a word pair is. Once discussing this, we will discuss why it is important to use the correct word of the pair in a sentence.
  2. Instruction- (Power Point) 8 minutes.
    1. Give Examples of Word Pairs used correctly and incorrectly in sentences
i. Its/It’s
ii. Affect/Effect
iii. To/Too/Two
iv. Accept/Except
v. Further/Farther
  1. Review- 9 minutesStudents will then have their own time to practice with the words.
    1. I will give them sentences and they will choose which word pair belongs where.
    2. Students will be divided into groups of 4 or 5 and receive a mini marker board.
    3. They will all at one time write the correct word pair for the given sentence.
    4. Once everyone is done they will reveal their answers.
    5. Closure – 3 minutes.
      1. I will ask the students if they have any questions.
EVALUATION: The teacher will identify if the students understood the 6 different word pairs. If students did not do well on the review, another mini lesson can be taught. The teacher will see progress of word pairs in future writing.
